Abidjan Rubber Plant
Abidjan Rubber Plant Care Guide
🌞 Light
Bright, indirect light is best — but it’s more forgiving than variegated types.
-
Ideal spot: A few feet away from a south or west-facing window.
-
Can tolerate: Lower light more than Belize, but will grow slower and produce smaller leaves.
-
Avoid: Harsh direct sunlight — can burn the leaves and cause discoloration.
✨ Pro tip: If you notice leggy growth, it’s craving more light.
💧 Water
Moderate water needs — consistency is key.
-
Water when: The top 2–5cm (1–2 inches) of soil feels dry.
-
General rule: Every 1–2 weeks in summer; less in winter.
-
Never: Let it sit in water. Root rot is the enemy.
Use a moisture meter or your finger to avoid guesswork.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Tropical at heart, but not dramatic.
-
Ideal temp: 18–26°C (65–79°F)
-
Minimum: Don’t let it dip below 13°C (55°F).
-
Humidity: Average room humidity is fine. If your air is super dry, give it the occasional mist or place near a humidifier.
🌱 Soil
Chunky and fast-draining.
-
Best mix: 2 parts peat-free compost or coco coir, 1 part perlite, 1 part bark.
-
Drainage tip: Use a pot with holes and maybe a terracotta pot to wick excess moisture.
🌿 Fertiliser
Feed it to keep those dark leaves glossy and strong.
-
Type: Balanced liquid fertiliser (like 10-10-10) or one slightly higher in nitrogen.
-
Frequency: Once a month during spring and summer.
-
Skip feeding in autumn/winter when growth naturally slows.
🪴 Potting & Repotting
Give it room to grow, but don’t rush.
-
When: Every 1–2 years or when roots circle the pot or pop out the drainage holes.
-
How: Go one pot size up — don’t overpot, or the roots will drown.
-
Best time: Spring or early summer.
✂️ Pruning & Shaping
Low-maintenance but responds well to pruning.
-
When: Late spring or summer.
-
Why: To control height, encourage branching, or remove leggy or damaged growth.
-
How: Cut just above a node using clean, sharp scissors or shears.
🌱 Propagation
Stem cuttings, baby!
-
Take a cutting with at least one healthy node and a leaf.
-
Let the sap dry (wear gloves – the latex can be irritating).
-
Root in water or moist soil.
-
Keep warm and humid — it can take a few weeks to root.
⚠️ Common Problems
| Problem | Symptoms | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Overwatering | Yellow leaves, mushy stems | Let dry out, repot if needed |
| Underwatering | Curling, drooping, crispy edges | Water more regularly |
| Low light | Leggy growth, smaller leaves | Move to a brighter spot |
| Pests | Sticky leaves, tiny dots, webbing | Treat with neem oil or insecticidal spray |
| Drafts/Cold | Leaf drop, slowed growth | Keep away from ACs or cold windows |
🌿 BONUS CARE TIPS
-
Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and show off that shine.
-
Rotate the pot regularly to promote even growth.
-
Milky sap alert: Avoid skin contact when pruning or propagating — it’s mildly toxic and can cause irritation.
