Lil Tineke Rubber Plant

Lil Tineke Rubber Plant Care Guide

🌞 Light

Bright, indirect light is a must for vibrant foliage.

  • Ideal spot: A few feet from a bright, east or west-facing window.

  • Direct sunlight: Can scorch the leaves, especially the lighter, variegated parts.

  • Low light: Will cause the variegation to fade and growth to slow down, so keep it as bright as possible!

✨ The more light you give it, the more vivid the creamy white variegation.

πŸ’§ Water

Moderate water needs β€” let it dry out between waterings.

  • Water when: The top 2–3cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry.

  • Avoid: Overwatering β€” too much moisture can lead to root rot.

  • Frequency: Every 1–2 weeks, depending on the season and your environment.

🍌 Remember, it’s better to underwater than overwater! The plant will bounce back from a bit of dryness faster than from soggy roots.

🌑️ Temperature & Humidity

Warm and humid, but tolerant of typical indoor conditions.

  • Ideal temp: 18–26Β°C (65–79Β°F)

  • Cold drafts: Avoid β€” these plants are sensitive to temperatures below 15Β°C (59Β°F).

  • Humidity: Prefers a bit of extra humidity (50% or higher), but will tolerate average levels.

🌫️ If you notice leaf tips turning brown, it’s usually a sign that the humidity is too low.

🌱 Soil

Well-draining soil with good air circulation.

  • Best mix: A peat-based mix with added perlite or bark for aeration. You can also use a standard houseplant mix with extra drainage.

  • Drainage: Make sure your pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.

🌿 Fertiliser

Feed during the growing season for optimal growth.

  • Type: Balanced liquid fertiliser (e.g., 10-10-10) or one slightly higher in nitrogen.

  • Schedule: Once a month during spring and summer.

  • Pause: No need to fertilise during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

🌿 Too much fertiliser can burn the roots or cause weak growth β€” always dilute to half strength.

πŸͺ΄ Potting & Repotting

Repot every 1–2 years or when rootbound.

  • Signs it’s time: Roots poking out of drainage holes, plant growth slowing down.

  • When to repot: Spring or early summer is ideal.

  • Pot size: Choose a pot that's 1–2 inches larger than the current one to allow room for growth.

βœ‚οΈ Pruning & Shaping

Minimal pruning required, but cutting back will help maintain shape.

  • When to prune: If you want to shape the plant or remove dead or damaged leaves, trim in late spring or summer.

  • Pruning tip: Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. Cut just above a node to encourage healthy regrowth.

🌱 Propagation

Stem cuttings are the way to go.

  1. Take a healthy cutting with at least one node and a leaf.

  2. Let the sap dry out for a few hours (wear gloves!).

  3. Root the cutting in water or a moist potting mix.

  4. Keep warm and humid, and it should root in about 4–6 weeks.

βœ‚οΈ Rooting in water allows you to see the roots grow, but it’s possible to root directly in soil as well.

⚠️ Common Problems

Problem Symptoms Solution
Overwatering Yellow leaves, mushy stems, root rot Let the soil dry out, repot if necessary
Underwatering Dry, crispy edges, yellowing leaves Water more regularly and ensure thorough watering
Low light Dull, faded colors, leggy growth Move to a brighter spot or add a grow light
Pests Sticky residue, small spots, webbing Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap
Temperature issues Leaf drop, slowed growth Keep away from drafts and cold spots

🌿 BONUS CARE TIPS

  • Leaf shine: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and help with photosynthesis.

  • Rotate the plant regularly for even growth and to avoid leaning towards the light.

  • Milky sap: The sap from cuttings or damaged leaves is toxic and can cause skin irritation, so always wear gloves when handling the plant.
